A hike is a perfect first date

Yesterday, I went with a friend on a hike to Seven Sisters. We met up at Victoria Station at 10 a.m. Well, technically, because we just happened to be on the same Victoria line train heading there.

We took the train to Eastbourne, grabbed a snack, and began the journey… which mostly involved getting lost on our way to the cliffs.

By the time we were on the train back to London around 6 p.m., I caught myself thinking: If I were interested in my friend, this would have been a perfect date.

We’d spent at least eight hours together. I’d seen him navigate different situations, take initiative (or not), make decisions about food and how he made them, even how he spent quiet moments alone. And through it all, there was no pressure to perform.

Granted, he’s my friend – he knows and respects my relationships, so I knew there was no underlying tension. But here’s the thing: when you spend an extended, unbroken stretch of time with someone, you’ll eventually get tired of “forming”.

So yeah… if you’re dating, try a hike early on. It’s a pretty good test for real compatibility.
